There are many ways to enjoy a holiday, of course, ranging from relaxing on a sandy Caribbean beach to skiing down the slopes of an Alpine mountain. We all have our own ideas about what makes the perfect vacation, and for some it’s a chance to get behind the wheel of a rented car and to explore an exotic region. If you like the thought of a motoring holiday, here are five countries which are worthy of consideration.
Ireland
One of the most picturesque nations in the whole of Europe, Ireland’s incredible scenery and relatively quiet roads make it perfect for a car-based vacation. There are several areas which should feature on your itinerary, but if we had to pick one perhaps the coastline of County Cork would be at the top of the list. There’s a reason they call this country the Emerald Isle, so book a trip and find out for yourself.
Switzerland

While most of us would think of Switzerland as primarily a destination for winter sports enthusiasts, the towns and villages that are more famous for skiing are beautiful in the summer. A touring holiday in and around the city of Geneva is an excellent idea, and of course the roads will be easier to traverse without the snow. Chocolate box houses, rolling green fields and a backdrop of mountains – what’s not to like?
United States of America

The country that is, above all others, inextricably linked with the increasing usage of the motor car is perfect for a driving holiday. There is something wonderfully iconic about the highways of America, partly perhaps because the scenery is familiar from countless movies and TV shows. From New England in the east to California in the west, there is always something to see in the USA.
France

Although it’s not a particularly good idea to drive through the traffic-strangled boulevards of Paris, motoring elsewhere in France is an enjoyable experience. The rural landscapes are exceptionally pleasing on the eye, and of course the coastal roads in the south, close to the exclusive holiday hot-spots of Cannes, Nice and St Tropez, are among the most atmospheric to be found anywhere in the world.
United Kingdom

Most tourists who head to the UK tend to stay in and around London, but it’s worth noting there is a whole country out there just waiting to be discovered. From the leafy lanes of Devon and Cornwall to the rolling roads of the Scottish Highlands, you can be sure of finding some spectacular views as you travel. And because Britain is a small country, you will never be far from an interesting sight.

Hi John and David. You’ve put together a fantastic post here! Very glad to see that France made the list. If any of your readers are regular visitors, or are planning a longer journey through France, they might be interested in the Liber-T tag from Sanef Tolling. The tag enables UK motorists to use the automatic telepeage lanes, which have previously been reserved for French residents. Find out more here: https://www.saneftolling.co.uk
Best wishes, Alex.
