Yes, it’s true. More and more men are learning the benefits of fighting aging, and doing what they can to look their best. This can include plastic surgery, non-invasive cosmetic treatments, and even makeup.
Cosmetic surgery helps men to lose the look of “male breasts” – which is known as gynecomastia. Male breast reduction is actually one of the top five plastic surgery procedures done for men.
Men also frequently have a procedure called liposuction to take care of what is known as the “beer belly.” Liposuction was the most common cosmetic procedure done on men last year, as it easily can rid the body of unwanted belly fat.
The aging face is, of course, the area that men have the most concern with. More and more men are taking the plunge and having a full face-lift done.
However, if you’re not ready to go under the knife just yet, there are a number of different non-surgical procedures and treatments that will take years off your face.
Botox, one of the most popular treatments of celebrities, is a muscle relaxant that is derived from a protein of the bacteria Clostridium botulinum.
First used in the 1980s to treat a variety of disorders such as uncontrollable blinking and muscle spasms, it was found that when used in small amounts and injected into the facial muscles that control frowning, the face became relaxed and looked much younger.
Dermal fillers are another injection solution to facial rejuvenation also popular with celebrities. Dermal filler injections differ from Botox in that they contain naturally-occurring Hyaluronic acid which helps plump up areas of the face that, due to the aging process, have lost collegian.
A treatment of a dermal filler smoothes out wrinkles, plumps up hollow cheeks, and softens the nasolabial folds (the deep creases that go from nose to chin).
And recently men have started to learn about makeup. As a dermatologist I work with many men who have undergone one of the many non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatments, and now want to know how to keep the luster and the glow – which means makeup and skin care products.
Men like to be efficient and look for “multitasking products” so they don’t have to apply so many things on their faces. Mineral based makeup technology allows for good coverage without the cake-on appearance so men are starting to think about using them without the fear of other people thinking they are too vain.
Many of my male patients also like tinted skin care products and sunscreens. My favorite is: Biopelle’s Tensage Radiance Eye Cream – has a growth factor that is from special snails! This growth factor has been shown to improve the texture of the skin, help with fine lines and also dark circles!
Since the under-eye area is the first area to show aging for most people, using a tinted anti-aging eye product saves the extra step of using a concealer. Also, since it moisturizes the area, you minimize the appearance of caked on, cracking makeup that can make wrinkles look even worse.
Men love tinted sunscreen and Jan Marini Skin Research has a great one that comes in various shades to fit all skin types. For men, this coverage is perfect because it gives a dewy, healthy look and an even coverage (like a nice spray tan) and combines both moisturizing and excellent sun protection.
