Learn to move your attention to the positive aspects of traveling abroad and you will be far more likely to enjoy your experience instead of shying away from meeting new people or going to a foreign land.
Do Your Research to Lessen Stress Levels Before You Travel Abroad
The prepared mind is much less likely to panic when faced with a new living situation. If you learn the relative vibe of a people, if you learn how you should interact and if you simply prepare yourself for the new culture you will effectively quell your fears. I did a good deal of research on many countries in Southeast Asia before taking my trip to this region of the world and learned quickly that the pace of life is slow. This is due to the temperature, humidity and overall mindset of accepting individuals in places like Bali, Thailand and Cambodia. Freaking out, being impatient and being loud or demonstrative in public, when faced with slower customer service than I am used to in New Jersey, will certainly not win you any brownie points with the locals. If anything your impatience or tantrums will cause people to ignore you.
I was fully prepared to wait in more than a few instances and sure enough, when customer service was a little lacking sometimes – like in the case of a 2 hour long wait sitting in a bus, for a reason I know not why – I was more than prepared to embrace these moments and let them go without acting like a fool and making my situation worse.
Enjoy your travels. Sure you might be faced with some barriers as you travel overseas but the benefits of seeing the world far outweigh any temporary moments of culture shock. Dwell on these positives and you will quickly kill the fear of culture shock.
